Andhra University, established in 1926 is a public university located in Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The university is the first to be accepted as a teaching-cum-affiliating and residential university in India. Further, it is accredited by the NAAC with an ‘A’ grade and is recognized by the UGC to award degrees to its students. Andhra University is ranked 24 and 48 by the NIRF 2021 in the ‘University’ and ‘Overall’ categories, respectively. It mainly offers postgraduate teaching and research education to its students. Andhra University has five constituent colleges, located in Kakinada (East Godavari District), Etcherla (Srikakulam Dist), Tadepalli Gudem, Vizianagaram, and Vishakhapatnam. The main campus being Vishakhapatnam comprises six departments. These departments offer over 310 courses at UG and PG levels in the fields of Science, Engineering, Arts, Commerce, Pharmacy, Law, and Education. There are a total of 365 affiliated colleges spread in five districts under the territorial jurisdiction of Andhra University. Apart from this, Andhra University has a School of Distance Education that offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional courses.
Andhra University is the second institute in the country to start pharmacy courses at University level in 1937. The pharmacy courses were initially offered in the B.Sc. Honours degree of chemical technology and as a specialization at M.Sc. Chemical Technology level. The importance of pharmaceutical sciences led to the formation of a separate department in 1951, with the commencement of B.Pharm. course with late Prof. S. Rangaswamy as founder Head of the Department. The M.Pharm. course was started in 1954. A separate Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences was formed in 1975.The department has been elevated as a constituent college of Andhra University in August 2006.
