Overview | St. Xavier's College, Kolkata

A Christian Minority Higher Educational Institution, St. Xavier’s was founded in 1860 by a Catholic Minority Religious Body, the Society of Jesus, and was affiliated with the University of Calcutta in 1862. While preference is shown for the educational and cultural needs of the Christian Minority community and the poor i.e. socially and financially marginalized, admission is open to all irrespective of caste, creed, and nationality. With a long and rewarding history of achievement of the Jesuits in education, our College community continues to move forward together with confidence, pride, and enthusiasm. This institution was created with the objective of providing 360-degree quality education which will enable students not only to thrive in academics but also motivate them towards character building, leadership, and extra and co-curricular activities. A very strong, dedicated, and capable team of educators has always been the driving force in the growth of the College.

Principled on the motto “NIHIL ULTRA” meaning “NOTHING BEYOND” and with the vision to promote a society based on love, freedom, liberty, justice, equality and fraternity, St. Xavier’s College aims to form young men and women of competence, commitment, compassion and conscience – men and women for others. This is the ideology of Jesuit Education. This enables students to herald social change – national and global. The College aims to inculcate the highest intellectual standards through rigorous academic commitment and discipline. Students are inspired to aspire to higher levels of academic achievement by mastering the subjects they have chosen to study. The College stands committed to making teaching and learning “Student Centric” which makes the students think, analyse and work independently by inculcating original and creative thinking. Currently, the College is offering 17 UG, 11 PG and 5 Doctoral programmes. I am proud to announce that as part of our expansion plan, two more PG courses, namely, M.A. in Sociology and M.Sc. in Economics were introduced in the 2020-21 academic session. Very recently, College has got approval to run a Doctoral programme in Computer Science. More PG & Doctoral programmes have been planned to offer in near future. The future vision of St. Xavier’s College lies in the introduction of 15 Post-Graduate Departments and 15 PhD. Programmes within a span of five years from now.
